The American General Corporation in Houston acquired the company in 1982, and it adopted its current name in 1984. Since that time three other companies, the Gulf Life Insurance Company, the Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company and the Home Beneficial Insurance Company merged into AGLA.
AGLA has 800 employees who work in Tennessee and more than 250 sales offices around the country. Through their subsidiaries, they offer life, fire, automobile and casualty insurance as well as investments. In the past five years, they have paid out $34 billion in claims.
