Fidelity and Guaranty Life Insurance Company is now:
Old Mutual (OM) Financial Life Insurance
About: Old Mutual Financial Life Insurance is a 50 year old company that sells life insurance through general agents in 49 states and the District of Columbia. New York is excluded but is serviced by the sister company, Fidelity and Guarantee Life Insurance of New York. The company also does business as Old Mutual Financial Network. They have about one million policy holders and, with the affiliates, have $28.2 billion in assets.
Offerings: OM Financial offers universal and term life insurance products along with fixed and variable investment products. The fixed products are available in both fixed interest and indexed interest contracts. For those looking for an increase in income, OM has both an immediate annuity (SPIA) and an immediate annuity with a senior safe guard option that, in some states, protects part of the asset from Medicaid spend down requirements. Variable products are offered by the licensed securities reps appointed with the company.
OM offers indexed universal life insurance options with minimum premium guarantees to age 120.
Unique Features: Old Mutual offers some unique features with both the fixed annuity products and the universal life insurance. With the fixed annuity, you can get a bonus of 5% of your initial premium. Most bonus annuities simply offer an extra 2 or 3 % of interest in the first year. The universal life insurance is indexed to the stock market, but at least one of the choices features a minimum premium guarantee benefit. That means that as long as your agreed-upon minimum premium is paid, your coverage remains lapse-proof to age 120.
Ratings: Old Mutual had some exposure to the economic crisis of 2009, but overall the balance sheet remains strong. The financial ratings dipped slightly, resulting in a A Rating from A.M. Best, BBB from Fitch, and Baa1 from Moody’s.
Location: The Company is headquartered at 1001 Fleet St., Baltimore, MD 21202.
